Seeking the Trophy
of Faith: Looking at Gaza Beyond the Glory of the World Cup
When the World
Celebrates, Gaza Weeps
The world today
seems captivated by the dazzling celebration of football. Magnificent stadiums
are filled with oceans of cheering crowds, giant screens display the brilliance
of world-class players, and billions of eyes are focused on a competition where
a prestigious trophy is at stake. For weeks, humanity’s attention appears to
revolve around one question: who will become the champion?
There is nothing
wrong with sports. Islam itself encourages people to maintain good health,
strengthen their physical abilities, and enjoy entertainment that does not
distract them from their responsibilities. Yet, in the middle of this global
celebration, there is a question worth reflecting upon:
Can our hearts
still hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who are suffering?
Let us briefly
turn our eyes away from the bright stadium lights and look toward a place
filled with darkness, wounds, and tears: Gaza.
There, millions of
people struggle every day simply to survive. Among them is a young child named
Mohammed. While other children wear the jerseys of their favorite football
stars and run happily on green fields, Mohammed runs among the ruins of
destroyed buildings. While others cheer for a match, he is startled by
explosions shaking the ground beneath his feet.
Mohammed’s
playground is not a beautiful football field with green grass, but a hot and
dusty refugee settlement. The roof above his head is no longer a strong home,
but a small emergency tent filled with hardship and uncertainty. A childhood
that should be filled with laughter has become a daily battle for survival.
Yet, what touches
the heart even more is the fact that Gaza’s children still try to smile. They
still play. They still learn. They still dream. Amid the destruction, they
teach the world the true meaning of patience, courage, and resilience.
Gaza and the Test
of Our Faith
For a Muslim,
witnessing the suffering in Gaza is not merely watching international news. It
is a test of our faith.
Allah SWT created
Muslims as one united community connected by compassion and responsibility.
This bond is not limited by language, skin color, nationality, or geographical
distance. When a Muslim suffers anywhere in the world, the hearts of other
Muslims should feel that pain as well.
The Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The believers, in
their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like one body. When one part of
the body suffers, the entire body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” (HR. Muslim No.
2586)
This hadith is not
merely a beautiful metaphor. It is a measure of true faith.
If one part of the
body is wounded, another part cannot remain completely comfortable. If our
brothers and sisters are hungry, can we still enjoy our meals without feeling
concern? If children in Gaza lose their parents, can our hearts remain
untouched as if nothing happened?
These questions
are not meant to blame anyone. They are meant to awaken the conscience that may
have been covered by the distractions of worldly life.
Supporting the
Oppressed: A Direct Message from the Qur’an
The Qur’an gives
great attention to the mustadh’afin—those who are weak, oppressed, and
unable to defend themselves.
Allah SWT says:
“And what is wrong
with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for those oppressed
among men, women, and children who say: ‘Our Lord, take us out of this city
whose people are oppressors…’” (QS. An-Nisa: 75)
This verse shows
that helping the oppressed is not merely an option, but part of our
responsibility as believers.
Of course, every
person’s contribution is different according to their ability and
circumstances. Some help through wealth. Some help through knowledge. Some help
through their efforts. Some help through sincere prayers.
What must never
happen is indifference.
When Allah
mentions the prayers of the oppressed in the Qur’an, it reminds us that Allah
hears every cry. And Allah will also ask us: What did we do when we knew
about their suffering?
Do Not Be Deceived
by the Glamour of the World
The World Cup,
golden trophies, championship titles, and fame are all parts of worldly life
that are temporary.
Today, someone may
be celebrated by millions of people. Tomorrow, their name may be forgotten.
Today, a team may lift a trophy in victory. Years later, that trophy may only
become a dusty decoration.
Allah SWT reminds
us:
“Know that the
life of this world is only play, amusement, decoration, boasting among
yourselves, and competition in wealth and children…” (QS. Al-Hadid:
20)
This verse does
not forbid people from enjoying worldly blessings. Instead, it reminds us not
to allow the world to control our hearts.
When entertainment
causes us to forget the suffering of others, that is when worldly pleasures
have taken a place they should not occupy.
A true believer
enjoys the blessings of life without losing compassion for the affairs of the
hereafter.
Helping Through
Wealth: A Real Expression of Love
Compassion that
remains only in the heart is not enough. True concern must be transformed into
real action.
Allah SWT
repeatedly praises those who spend their wealth to help others. During
humanitarian crises, food, clean water, clothing, medicine, and shelter are
among the greatest needs.
The amount we give
may seem small in the eyes of people. But with Allah, no act of charity is ever
wasted.
The Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Protect
yourselves from the Fire even if by giving half of a date in charity.” (HR. Bukhari and
Muslim)
Perhaps a food
package we help provide becomes a lifeline for a child who has endured days of
hunger.
Perhaps a drop of
water we help deliver becomes a reason Allah sends His mercy upon us.
Helping Through
Our Voice and Awareness
In the digital
era, every Muslim has the opportunity to become a messenger of goodness.
Social media,
often used for entertainment, can also become a platform to spread humanitarian
awareness. Sharing accurate information, educating others wisely, and
encouraging compassion are valuable contributions.
However, this
effort must be carried out with Islamic ethics. Avoid false information,
hatred, and unverified claims.
Be a spreader of
truth, empathy, and hope.
Do not allow
humanitarian issues to disappear beneath the endless waves of entertainment.
The Believer’s
Weapon That Never Fails: Prayer
There are moments
when we feel powerless to change circumstances. We may not be able to travel to
Gaza. We may not have authority or great influence. But Allah has given
us a powerful weapon: Dua.
The Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The supplication
of a Muslim for his brother in his absence will be answered.” (HR. Muslim No.
2733)
Prayer is not an
escape from action. Prayer is the source of strength behind every action.
When the night
comes and the world falls asleep, raise your hands. Mention the children of
Gaza in your prayers. Ask Allah to protect them. Ask for strength for mothers
who have lost their children. Ask for safety for orphans and those who are
wounded.
No prayer
disappears before Allah. Every word is heard and recorded by Him.
A Prayer for Our
Brothers and Sisters in Gaza and Palestine
Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm
“In the name of
Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.”
O Allah, honor
Islam and the Muslims, and help our oppressed brothers and sisters in Gaza and
Palestine.
O Allah, have
mercy upon their martyrs, heal their sick, restore those who are injured, and
accept their patience and struggles.
O Most Merciful,
have mercy upon the innocent children of Gaza. Remove their fear, provide them
with food when they are hungry, and grant them safety and peace.
O Allah, grant the
people of Gaza relief from every sorrow, a way out from every hardship, and
protection from every calamity.
O Allah,
strengthen the hearts of parents who have lost their children, and become the
Protector and Helper of the orphans.
Our Lord, give us
goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the
punishment of the Fire.
Āmīn, O Lord of
all worlds.
May Allah send
blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.
All praise belongs
to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
THE TRUE TROPHY
In the end, every
worldly celebration will come to an end.
The cheers will
fade.
The stadium lights
will be turned off.
The trophies will
be placed inside cabinets.
The names of
champions will eventually be replaced by new generations.
But there is one
victory that will never disappear: The victory of faith.
When we stand
before Allah SWT, He will not ask which team we supported or which match we
watched.
What will matter
is:
How much
compassion we showed.
How many tears we
helped wipe away.
How sincere our
prayers were for those who suffered.
Let Gaza remind us
that life is not only about entertainment and pleasure.
Behind every
comfort we enjoy, there is a responsibility to care for those who are
struggling.
Do not forget
little Mohammed in Gaza.
Do not allow the
cries of oppressed children to disappear from our prayers.
Because the true
trophy is not the cup lifted on the world’s podium.
The true trophy is
the pleasure of Allah SWT, which will lead us to eternal victory in the
Hereafter.
