Azzam, the Young Boy Who
Shows Us the Incredible Power of Prayer
His name is Azzam—just
twelve years old, small in stature, innocent-faced, and from a modest village
in Indonesia. No one would have expected that a boy his age could perform
umrah, a dream that even many adults have yet to achieve.
Azzam’s father is a daily
laborer. His mother works as a home-based seamstress. Their lives are far from
abundant; at times, they must calculate each day just to make ends meet. Yet
behind this simplicity lies a habit of Azzam’s that leaves many adults astonished—a
habit that became the key to a journey no one saw coming.
After every prayer, Azzam
would raise his little hands and supplicate,
“O Allah, allow me to see the Kaaba before I grow up.”
That prayer was not just
a phrase. He repeated it for years—in his prostration, in the silence of the
night, and in every hope he carried.
A Child’s Prayer That
Trembles the Throne
Allah says:
“Your Lord has said,
‘Pray to Me, and I will surely answer you.’” (QS Ghafir: 60)
Azzam believed in that
verse. While many children his age were busy with gadgets, he chose to help his
father or recite Qur’an at the local prayer hall. He saved small coins in a
biscuit tin—not for toys, but for a dream that even adults often fear to hold
on to.
Until one day, the ustadz
in his village announced a special umrah program funded by congregational
contributions and donors. One seat was allocated for an orphan or
underprivileged child known for consistent prayer and good character.
Azzam’s name was called.
His mother wept
uncontrollably. His father sat still for a long time, unable to believe it.
They knew this was not a coincidence.
This was the answer to a
prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is nothing more
noble in the sight of Allah than supplication.” (HR. Tirmidhi)
A Journey That Softened
the Heart
The trip was not easy. It
was Azzam’s first time on an airplane. But determination and gratitude
strengthened his heart.
In Madinah, he cried when
he stood in Rawdah—the garden of Paradise on earth.
In Makkah, when he first
laid eyes on the Kaaba, his legs trembled. His lips could not form a long
sentence. Tears streamed silently.
He only whispered:
“O Allah… thank You. You did not laugh at me.”
How beautiful is the
certainty of a child who believes that Allah hears every whisper of his heart.
A Heart Made Gentler
After Umrah
After returning home,
Azzam did not grow proud; instead, he became even more humble. He prayed more
diligently, guarded his speech, helped his parents, and often reminded adults
with kindness.
“If Allah wills, nothing
is impossible,” he would say softly whenever someone doubted their hopes.
How true Allah’s words
are:
“If Allah helps you, none
can overcome you.” (QS Ali ‘Imran: 160)
And His promise:
“Whoever fears Allah, He
will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.” (QS At-Talaq: 2–3)
Dreams Accompanied by
Prayer Are Never in Vain
Azzam’s story is not a
fairy tale. It is real—and it happened in Indonesia. Azzam teaches us that
dreams carried with prayer, good character, and patience will never be wasted.
Sometimes Allah grants them not because we are capable, but because we sincerely
hope in Him.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Pray to Allah with full
certainty that He will answer your prayer.” (HR. Tirmidhi)
Azzam may be a child, but
his faith is greater than that of many adults. He shows that what truly matters
is not who we are, how wealthy we are, or how strong we appear—but how firmly
we place our trust in Allah.
For in the end, heartfelt
prayers are doors that Allah always opens for His sincere servants.
